The next Southwest Allen County Schools superintendent will receive an annual base salary of $190,000 pending board approval next month, according to the proposed three-year contract published today in The 95秀视频 Gazette.

Joshua St. John, the current assistant superintendent, is expected to lead the district beginning July 1 following the June 30 resignation of Kent DeKoninck.

SACS announced the administrative changes two weeks ago. Board approval is expected March 4.

St. John鈥檚 proposed salary is 30% more than his current total salary of $145,600, according to an agreement signed last summer.

But St. John won鈥檛 make as much as DeKoninck, who joined the district last year on a one-year contract offering $216,000 annually. DeKoninck鈥檚 predecessor, Park Ginder, ended his tenure with a total salary of $177,200.

Nationwide, leaders of districts with enrollments comparable to SACS earned a median base compensation of $203,500 last academic year, according to an annual study by AASA, The School Superintendents Association.

Under the proposed terms, St. John鈥檚 base salary will increase by the same percentage as other SACS administrators if he is evaluated as 鈥渆ffective鈥 or 鈥渉ighly effective.鈥 The board has the discretion to award an additional raise, but the overall increase is not to exceed $10,000 in any year.

St. John may also receive annual performance bonuses up to $10,000 at the board鈥檚 discretion. He would be ineligible if the board deems his work 鈥渋neffective鈥 or 鈥渘eeds improvement.鈥

Other terms include health insurance, an annual $600 cellphone allowance and an annual $10,000 transportation allowance. He already receives those benefits, but his automobile allowance is $2,500.

St. John鈥檚 initial employment term would end June 30, 2028. It may be extended by an additional year up to five years.

St. John was promoted to the district鈥檚 central office from Summit Middle School principal two years ago.

His credentials include a bachelor鈥檚 degree in mathematics teaching from Purdue University Fort Wayne, a master鈥檚 degree in education administration from Ball State University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Purdue.

DeKoninck plans to remain with SACS part-time as chief administrative officer.
